Akron, Ohio

Akron Arial ViewOkay, so Akron is pretty much the home town affair, but since I have spent a good deal of time there ... I suppose it counts.

Akron is kind of the middle ground for NE Ohio. Nestled between Cleveland, Canton and Youngstown it is technically thought of as a suburb-city to Cleveland by the 2000 census board (a ruling that is currently being suspended until '02 while under review). Akron is home to the University of Akron, Firestone and Goodyear facilities and several other international industries.

Travel:

Airports - Cleveland Hopkins Airport (CLE) and Akron Canton Airport (CAK) are within a short 10 and 30 minute drive respectively. CLE is a little cheaper though and has a few more hubs for connecting flights.
Bus - Grey Hound service is just a few miles from downtown. And the area is serviced by a Regional Trasit Authority (RTA) although it is not as extensive as Larger cities.
Auto - Probably the best way to get around once your there. Akron is serviced by interstate 77 and 76 and parking is ample.

Restaurants: Akron is supported mostly by chain restaurants and so there are a lot of safe alternatives.
Fine Dining - Vacarros (Itallian); Tangiers
Sites:

Downtown - Not really much downtown to visit. It's a small city and so there isn't very much to site see. Worth mentioning though would be the Akron Museum of Art.
Local - Stan Hewitt Hall; Cuyahoga Valley Recreation Area (site) in particular Virgina Kendel Park.
In the Area - NFL Hall of fame; Rock and Roll Hall of fame; Cleveland sports franchises

Events: Year Round - EJ Thomas Performing Arts Hall; Cleveland Sports Franchises; Various Concerts
Clubs:

Akron's club district is right downtown. There you can find a ready variety of environments. No dress codes in general and age groupings are not really segregated.
Downtown - Electra ($3 cover, Pop-Industrial Dance); Jillians ($3-5 cover, live band events; billiards and conversation); Bananna Joes ($3-5 cover, 18+ lower dance level 21+ upper dance level, Pop-Rock dance and conversation); Brubakers ($0 cover light dinner, coversation).
In the Area - Boot Scoot Saloon ($5 cover, country dance and conversation); Pelican Cove ($3 cover, Pop-Rock Dance, Local Live Metal Bands, Seasonal Volleyball, Scenic Light dinner on Lake)
