Savannah, Georgia

History, mystery, great food, and lots of sights? Savannah is the place for your next Power Weekend.

I went to Savannah by way of extending an abbreviated vacation in Hilton Head Island South Carolina. Savannah is just a short hour's drive from there and truly a destination worth the time away from the beach.

A few recommendations;

  • Go to the visitor's center to get a list of B&B's who offer daily specials, you can save 25%-50% off downtown stays which save on driving and parking hassles;
  • Parking is free anywhere in the city after 6pm weekdays and any time on the weekend;
  • Carry water on the hot afternoons, you'll get charged an arm and a leg anywhere you buy it along the way and it IS hot;
  • 2-3 days is all you need for a complete tour of Historic Savannah. We spent a fairly relaxed 2 days and 2 nights and felt like we'd hit all we wanted and needed to see.

Travel:

Airports - Savannah International Airport
Bus - Grey Hound service is right by the Visitor Center and within a short trolly ride from downtown.
Auto - Main access to the city is from I95 either North or South. Then you have a choice of I16 or Rt17. Rt17 enters the city from the North but offers a commanding drive over the brand new 5mi bridge across the Savannah river.

Restaurants:

Casbah Moroccan Restaurant - (912) 234-6168 Savannah, GA - This restaurant offers acomplete Moroccan experience from the low tables and tent motif, to the belly dancing and fortune telling. Combined with a terrific menu and a full service staff, you'll feel at home even if this is your first time eatting Moroccan quizzine. Reservations strongly recommended, but will within walking distance of any downtown hotel. $50-$70
Heuy's - (000) 000-0000 Savannah, GA This River Street restaurant offers a fine menu of Creole food. A little pricey for lunch, although we enjoyed the "dinner-bar" atmosphere. Don't go there for the service though. For good service you'll have to pay a lot more and find it elsewhere. $25
The Cotton Exchange - (000) 000-0000 We asked two locals for recommendations on a good local salad place and both suggested the Cotton Exchange. This River Street restaurant had a wonderful menu of salad and traditional meal choices. Our salads were just the right size and we even had room for some pie afterwards. $50

Sites:

Squares - The original city planners of Savannah laid out the city so that garden-like squares would be in reach of nearly every city block. And each is a tribute to the history makers and events of Savannah and the South. You can take walking tours, guided walking tours, carriage rides, and bus rides that offer plenty of information that can be tailored to your tastes.
Home Museums- There are many tours or period homes in the historic district. Davenport house was one we enjoyed, however be prepared to pay up to $7 a person for a 40min tour.

Tours:

Savannah Walking Tours - All the historic district is well within walking distance for even the light hiker. The city is broken down into several parts and the Visitor Information Centers at the bus depot and at River Street, and any of the hotels can provide easy to read Maps, if a little wanting in information.
Guided Tours - Were the self-guided tours leave off, there are guided tours that can fill out the history of this beautiful city.
Carriage Tours of Savannah - (912) 236-6756 We took the "Ghost Tour" and really enjoyed it. There's another side to the history of this old world city and this tour which left the City Market at 10:00, was a 60 minute journey though the ghosts, ghasts, gouls, and vombies that inhabit every shadow of Savannah. Reservations are a must. $17/person
Old Town Trolly Tours - Trolly tours will take you through a more historic lay of the land. A lot depends on your guide, or first was hillariously sardonic and related most of the modern history of Savannah. We had to change busses however for the remainder of the tour, and our next guide was pretty dry. Kind of just going through the motions. You can choose between a one shot 90min tour for $19/person through a day tour with multiple on-off privalages for up to $23/person. We didn't especially enjoy the tour and could pass for a different activity.

Events: River Street Players - Saturday evening the Savannah street performers assemble on the board walk of River Street. Animal acts, artists, musicians, jugglers, there's plenty of variety to suite any fancy. Shows last from 10-20 minutes and the cost is up to your generous nature.
Clubs:

There are a few clubs along River Street worth visiting. Take a walk along the board walk and keep an eye out for the crowd. Most of the folks you'll meet are vacationers so the opportunity for a "target rich environment" is good.
