St Louis
I
originally looked to traveling to St Louis to attend a software convention
(technically a video game convention). Upon ariving however, I discovered
that St Louis has an awful lot to offer for a weekend traveler. The people
are friendly and likable. Very easy to settle down with an out of towner
and share what they know of their town and the wheres and hows of getting
around. Actually, that was one of the best experiences.
Airport hotels and airline tickets were very inexpensive and the train
couldn't provide better service dropping passagers off just blocks from
anywhere downtown.
The second largest Marti Gras in the nation was a nice touch too. Imagine
my pleasant surprise to find myself smack in the middle of it!
| Travel: |
Airport - Lambert something something ... I'll
have to look that up and get back with you.
Train - The Metro Rail is clean, fast and efficient. Just a 20
min ride from the airport, it winds a serpentine track past all the
best sites of StL. Get the day pass and one of their easy to follow
maps. |
| Sites: |
Arch - Yes, it pretty cool to visit. You can
take the ride up inside and laugh at the people who get scared of
heights or clostropobic in the little elevators you're squeezed into.
The Rangers who operate the tour are pretty cool too.
Heritage Museum - Actually, unless you already knew it was
directly underneath the arch (as I didn't) you might miss it. The
facility is literally underground and is a very enjoyable free tour.
A good place to spend a few hours before having a picnic in the surrounding
park on a lazy afternoon. |
| Events: |
Theater - Well okay, so it's not really as lively
as you'd think. Actually more of a sleeper movement but the Mall has
evening live performances by a troop of young adults that is family
oriented and enjoyable.
Marti Gras - StL boasts the second largest Marti Gras celebration
in the country and lives up to it with weekend long festivities, parades
and fun. |
| Clubs: |
JJ's - You'll find this comfortable/ laid back jazz club
in the downtown hotel district. With live bands on the weekends,
dance, a spacious bar and plenty of backgammon tables, I couldn't
have hoped for a more relaxing of socializing and music.
The Cheetah Club - This dance club is a little ways out
from downtown. But it's a comfortable 10 minute cab ride from there
and definitely worth going to if you want to be at the hot StL scene.
Street - Just to the north of the last train stop on the
west side of Ol' Miss is the bar district. A few chain dance clubs
and plenty of bar crawl potential exists there. Quite a fun evening
if you're into that sort of thing.
